Rugby Sevens miss out on medal opportunity

The Team Scotland Rugby Sevens missed out on the chance to medal at the Gold 2018 Commonwealth Games after they lost to World Rugby Series leaders and Commonwealth champions, South Africa, in the last game of day one at the Robina Stadium tonight.

The team opened their account with an impressive win over Papua New Guinea, scoring five unanswered tries through Jamie Farndale (2), James Fleming, Darcy Graham and George Horne, to cruise on to round two (27-0).

They followed that up with a 41-0 win over Malaysia, Farndale and Horne each scoring twice, with solo efforts from Graham, Max McFarland, and Robbie Fergusson completing the win.

With only the top-ranked team from each group advancing to the last four (of which three will collect medals), Scotland’s last match against South Africa was predicted to be decisive, with ‘Blitzbokke’ winning 26-5 (Farndale again the Scottish scorer) to the rugby team’s hopes of securing Team Scotland’s first team medal.

Team Scotland Rugby Sevens will now face Wales at 10:37 hrs (01:37 hrs UK time) in the Men’s Placing 5-8 rounds, with the resulting 5/6th and 7/8th placing rounds at 13:11 and 13:33 hrs respectively (04:11 and 04:33 hrs UK time).
