Tennent’s Women’s Premier League | Watsonians aim for the top

Watsonians travel to Hughenden this weekend in the hope of replacing Hillhead Jordanhill at the top of the table.

Sunday’s game (kick-off 2pm) will see the leading two teams in the Tennent’s Women’s Premier League face each other for the first time this season.

Hosts Hillhead Jordanhill have enjoyed a flawless campaign so far, achieving five bonus point wins from five matches.

Watsonians are just four points behind in second place, the result of four strong wins and a narrow loss to Stirling County earlier in the season.

Both sides will be relishing the opportunity to test themselves against tough opposition. At their last meeting – the Premier Development Cup in May – it was Watsonians who asserted dominance, winning 54-7.

Just a few weeks earlier, Hillhead Jordanhill took home the silverware from BT Murrayfield, having defeated Watsonians 68-12 in the Sarah Beaney Cup final.

Hillhead Jordanhill won the league competition last season, while Watsonians ended their campaign in sixth place – a result they’re determined to improve on this time around.

Watsonians Head Coach, Dave Flynn, said: “We are expecting Hills to be a formidable opponent this weekend and for this to be a tough game but the ladies are really looking forward to it and relishing the challenge of taking on the current league leaders.

“The two games they played vs Hills last season (in the Sarah Beaney Cup final and then Premier Development Cup final a few weeks later) had very different outcomes so it’ll be interesting to see how this one pans out.

“The squad have prepared and trained well over the last two weeks so I’m expecting them to put in a strong performance on Sunday.”

Hillhead Jordanhill Head Coach, Aird Jardine, said: “We are expecting an exciting match and for it to be very well contested.

“Hopefully the weather doesn't stop there being some great entertaining rugby on display.

“We have trained very hard over the last few weeks and are hoping for this to show once again on the pitch on Sunday.”

Elsewhere in this weekend’s Tennent’s Women’s Premier League, Stewarty welcome Corstorphine and Stirling County take on Cartha Queens Park in the final round of fixtures before the league splits.
